At least 3 deputies killed in explosion at Los Angeles County Sheriff's training facility

At least three deputies were killed in an explosion at a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department training facility on Friday morning, authorities said.

The facility, the Eugene Biscailuz Regional Training Academy, is about 5 miles east of L.A. City Hall.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed the fatalities while announcing federal agents were responding to the incident.

"I just spoke to @USAttyEssayli about what appears to be a horrific incident that killed at least three at a law enforcement training facility in Los Angeles," Bondi posted to X.

"Our federal agents are at the scene and we are working to learn more. Please pray for the families of the sheriff’s deputies killed."

U.S. Rep. Jimmy Gomez, D-Calif., said in a statement that this "explosion has claimed the lives of at least three deputies."

"My condolences to the families and everyone impacted by this loss," added the federal lawmaker, who represents this neighborhood where the blast happened.

The L.A. City Fire Department, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents and the LAPD bomb squad responded to the scene, Mayor Karen Bass said.

"The thoughts of all Angelenos are with all of those impacted by this blast," Bass said in a statement.

The office of California Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a statement that the governor had been briefed on the "reported explosion."

"The Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, @Cal_OES, is in contact with the Sheriff’s Department and closely monitoring the situation, and has offered full state assistance," the statement posted to X said.

Hilda Solis, who represents the L.A. County Board of Supervisors district where the blast happened, said she's been in close contact with Sheriff Robert Luna.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred this morning at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Biscailuz Training Academy in East Los Angeles," Supervisor Solis said in a statement.

"My heart goes out to the families, friends, and colleagues of the three individuals who lost their lives in what appears to have been a devastating explosion. I am in contact with Sheriff Robert Luna and closely monitoring the situation as we await further details. My thoughts are with all those grieving and the first responders who are on the scene."

The L.A. County Sheriff's Department is the nation's largest local sheriff's agency. Deputies patrol L.A. County courthouses, jails, unincorporated communities in the county and provides police services to cities that contract with the department.

Questions swirl around 'Arab forces' named in Netanyahu's Gaza plan

Even if Israel managed to somehow execute its plan, “we will not change anything in the approach of Hamas,” a former Israeli general told USA NEWS DAILY Aug. 9, 2025, 5:26 AM GMT+6 By  Alexander Smith Israel’s plan to seize Gaza City and hand control of the enclave to unspecified “Arab forces” has not only drawn condemnation by Western governments and aid agencies — some former officials and experts inside Israel say it would be unworkable. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu  and his security cabinet voted early on Friday for a plan to capture the city in the north of the enclave, one of the few places inside the strip that the Israeli military does not control, while distributing aid to civilians outside combat zones. The five-point plan “for concluding the war ” calls for the disarming of Hamas, the return of all hostages and the demilitarization of the Gaza Strip, which would be under Israeli security control. It also proposes that a governm...

Meta to share AI infrastructure costs via $2 billion asset sale

August 2, 2025 3:59 AM GMT+6 Updated August 2, 2025 Aug 1 (Reuters) - Meta Platforms  (META.O)  is pressing ahead with efforts to bring in outside partners to help fund the massive infrastructure needed to power artificial intelligence, disclosing plans in a filing on Thursday to offload $2 billion in data center assets as part of that strategy. The strategy reflects a broader shift among tech giants — long known for self-funding growth — as they grapple with the  soaring cost  of building and powering data centers to support generative AI. The social media giant said earlier this week that it was exploring ways to work with financial partners to co-develop data centers to help finance its  massive capital outlay  for next year. “We’re exploring ways to work with financial partners to co-develop data centers,” Meta Chief Finance Officer Susan Li said on a post-earnings conference call on Wednesday. While the company still expects to fund much o...

Man who asked ChatGPT about cutting out salt from his diet was hospitalized with hallucinations

A case report published in a medical journal reported that the 60-year-old man replaced sodium chloride with sodium bromide after consulting the AI bot. The man shared that he had taken it upon himself to conduct a "personal experiment" to eliminate table salt from his diet after reading about its negative health effects. The report said he did this after consulting with ChatGPT. A 60-year-old man spent three weeks being treated at a hospital after replacing table salt with sodium bromide following consultation with a popular artificial intelligence chatbot. Three physicians published a case report on the matter in the Annals of Internal Medicine earlier this month. According to the report, the man had no prior psychiatric history when he arrived at the hospital "expressing concern that his neighbor was poisoning him." The man shared that he had been distilling his own water at home and the report noted he seemed "paranoid" about water he was offer...
